Bold interiors for a brutalist London landmark with unparalleled views

A Vantage Collection residence inside the iconic Centre Point

Our design story is rooted in Centre Point’s brutalist precision, strong geometry and arresting silhouettes. This is, after all, a London icon, a white edifice, both barbarous and beautiful, that guides us like a concrete North Star whenever we’ve lost our bearings in the Capital.

It’s a gorgeous building to work with – one that urged us to celebrate its distinctive exoskeleton, grey-scale mosaics and epic views.

Colour one’s view

We commissioned a local artist to paint a ceiling mural that captures the bright blues and fiery hues of the sunrises and sunsets that pour in through the east- and west-facing picture windows. The quadrilateral shapes are an abstract reflection of the geometric limestone floor. Such vivid colours contrast with the cool, white-grey exterior of the building. It’s joyfully unexpected like opening a manila envelope to reveal a rainbow-coloured party invitation.

Comfort and joy

In the living room, low-slung furniture keeps the focus on the views over Mayfair and Hyde Park. A giant L-shaped sofa zones the space to create an island of tranquillity with easy-to-reach tables, deep-seated lounge chairs, and a silky-soft rug. By resisting a symmetrical layout, we’ve eased the flow between the living, dining and study areas.

The great divide

We created a bronze room divider with open shelves, panes of coloured glass, and a marble bioethanol fireplace that slots into a polygonal frame with pin-sharp precision. This bespoke piece adds a new ‘architectural’ focal point to the space while subtly cordoning off the dining area. When the evening sun hits the lattice-like structure, lengthening shadows are cast across the walls, floor and ceiling.

Through a different lens

Light plays beautifully in the apartment, a quality that inspired several features – from a chandelier of magnifying glass discs to eight jewel-coloured etchings by Anish Kapoor that stretch from the dining area into the kitchen. The wallpaper, too, is faintly iridescent, so that when the sun sets across the city, its coppery tones become inflamed.

French twist

The design for our pared back study started with a desk – Edition No. 3 of 8 – by French furniture maker Bruno de Maistre. This piece, much like brutalist architecture, appears starkly unadorned at first glance. But when you take a second look, beautiful details emerge: The twisting legs, cleverly concealed drawer, and smooth, seemingly jointless surfaces.

To this we added a vintage Fabricius & Kastholm chair, which dates back to Centre Point’s construction between 1963 and 1966. Like the desk, it too follows the unpretentious aesthetic of brutalism, a look that complements the robust-looking chaise next to it.

Pillars of strength

The embracing warmth of the terracotta velvet wall in the principal bedroom is enhanced by a large, blood-red abstract and vary-width pillars of red brushed cotton with white, geometrically-patterned beading. It’s an impactful look – rich, indulgent and reassuringly cocooning.

The pillars are inspired by the building’s towering exterior. So too are the megalithic-looking lamps, which contrast beautifully with the smooth, hand-carved curves of the black teak bedsides.

Mirroring mosaics

The original grey-scale mosaic wall is abstractly mirrored in a densely patterned fabric of squares, arcs and zigzags. The pattern also resembles the jumble of London streets that can be seen from up high in the apartment. The squiggly design is offset by calm, putty-pink walls and a large, AI-generated print resembling a Dutch Master’s still life full of warm, complementary hues.

Ripple effect

Centre Point is famous for its rippling rhythms of precast concrete. It’s a bold and beautiful design, one we wanted to capture in our headboard. The piece comprises a grid of dark green leather and panels of multi-green, thick-weave yarn. Its pleasing oscillations are echoed in the chevron-patterned wallpaper. Repeat patterns can also be found in the artwork, where pseudo-mystical symbols and hieroglyphs form grids, zigzags and stacked horizontal lines. It’s an actively referential design that reveals a little more of itself every time you stop to take it in.
