Factory fresh

From industrial buildings to multimillion-pound homes

Where warehouses offer industrial character, factory conversions are almost sacred in their intensity – vast, cathedral-like volumes, heroic windows and dazzling ornamental cornices, pilasters and patterned brickwork, all wrapped around a history that many cities once tried to erase.

For decades, most factories were flattened, so the few that did survive now symbolise rescued fragments of a past life long forgotten.

What’s true of factories is even truer of landmark power stations. These civic monuments are so rare, so colossal and so loaded with cultural pedigree that buying into one feels like claiming a slice of an icon that, in most other places, has already been razed to the ground.
